Sunset: "The colors and light visible in the sky on an occasion of the sun's disappearance in the evening, considered as a view or spectacle". There are surprisingly a few definitions of the word sunset. It can also be used to define a low point in someone's life. The first definition though is what everyone pictures when they hear the word of course. The spectacle is the many colors when the lights joins with the sky in exactly the right spots. This happens here often especially here on campus because of the height of the mountain our school sits on top of, which makes it even easier to see. * It has always been thought that air pollution such as dust and aerosols cause the brilliant colors of sunsets. However clean air is the best ingredient for sunsets. So cities like New York and LA do not tend to be looked at for neither their clean air nor their sunsets. This is why cities in which cleaner air is present, such as Hawaii, are always known for their beautiful sunsets. After being in Hawaii once and LA I can confirm this fact. The sunsets in Honolulu are stopped and stared at while the ones in LA are more covered in smog than color. * Clouds also play a role in sunsets. Clouds must be high enough to reflect light that has not lost any color from passing through the boundary layer of the atmosphere. When the middle layered clouds take on a "bathed in red" effect, the clouds are allowing very little blue light to touch the ground. "Red sky at night; Sailor's delight". When lower clouds try to take on light, more blue is shown leaving little room for reds and oranges. Now thinking about this, the more crowded the clouds are the prettier the sunset is when no blue can escape.
